OCALA, Fla., May 15 (UPI) -- A Florida man claims that he fatally stabbed his friend in self-defense during a fight about the last can of beer.

According to Daniel Trent, he then stabbed 56-year-old Mark Durham's dog in the stomach because the dying man asked him to, killing the brown and white beagle.

Trent was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder after stabbing Durham once in the stomach and once in the chest.

Prior to the fight, Trent and Durham drank a 24-pack of Natural Ice and then went back to the store and bought an 18-pack to split. After drinking all of that, there was a fight about the 42nd beer.

"He didn't want to share it. He wanted it for himself," Trent said while he was at Marion County Jail, the Ocala Star Banner reported. "I stabbed him. I felt this was self-defense because he attacked me."

A judge ordered that Trent be held without bond. Trent reportedly receives services from the Universal Life Care Advocate Center, an agency that helps disabled adults with things like finding housing and getting jobs.
