NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., May 7 (UPI) -- The National Football League’s annual draft is coming up on Thursday, but it sounds like some male students at a California high school have already held an NFL-style draft of their own -- to pick their prom dates.

According to reports, juniors and seniors at Corona del Mar High School have been picking their prom dates via draft for a number of years. During the draft process, the boys rank the female students and the selling of first-round picks is allowed.

This year, one junior paid $140 to get a high first-rank pick, according to the Los Angles Times. “It’s awkward because he spent a large amount of money to go with someone he doesn’t talk to,” a student said of the situation. “And she finds it awkward that he chose her.”

Corona del Mar High principal Kathy Scott emailed parents about the draft.

“I am sure that the intention of this ‘draft’ is not to be harmful, but it may be,” Scott wrote. “It is not OK for any student to be objectified or judged in any way. This is not behavior that is consistent with our school’s outstanding reputation.”

Sophomore Jessie Harris was one of the girls who was included in the draft.

“I am part of the draft and am friends with many girls in the draft and yes, in some instances girls can be picked by appearance,” she wrote to the Orange County Register. “It is all just a fun way to decide who you will be going to prom with. It is not meant to harm those who are picked and I do not believe that it does. It is not, was never, and will never ever be used to objectify the girls at our school.”

The school's prom is June 7.
