MILWAUKEE, April 29 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin woman helped stop a stranger from jumping off a bridge near Miller Park in Milwaukee when she saw him on the wrong side of a fence over I-94 on Sunday.

Jill Hewitt approached the man and held onto him until officers from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center arrived to help.

Hewitt spoke to the man for several minutes by herself before reinforcements could arrive.

"I told him I wouldn't let him go," Hewitt told WTMJ. "God meant for you not to take your own life. It was not his time or choice to do that."

The man never revealed why he wanted to jump, but kept repeating, “I want to die. I want to die.”

After the rescue, the man was brought to a VA hospital for treatment. Hewitt hopes that she will see him again. "I owe him a ride on my horse,” she said.
