Man goes to court over Girl Scout Cookies

FORT COLLINS, Colo., March 7 (UPI) -- IT specialist Tad Osborn originally wrote a $42 check for Girl Scout Cookies and it has turned into an almost $800 lawsuit.

Osborn bought about a dozen boxes of Girl Scout Cookies for $42. Six months later, he received a notice saying that his check had bounced and he was told he owed double what he originally paid. The Girl Scout Troop's bank claimed that his account was closed, but he provided documentation saying that was not true.

"When a check is reported as bad debt by a troop's bank, the troop attempts to contact the customer and the council then attempts to resolve the debt," said a statement from the Girl Scouts of Colorado. "Like any other business, after multiple attempts to resolve, we use a professional collection agency."

Osborn said he never received such notification, and now he has racked up filing fees fighting the collection agency over the charge. He still supports the organization and has a daughter who just became a Girl Scout.

He will still buy cookies but has one recommendation: "I would recommend anyone who wants to buy Girl Scout cookies pay cash."
