He worked through ice-cold temperatures and the occasional snowstorm for five weeks in the hope that his whimsical creation would make people smile. “It’s a smile idea. Building a snowman isn’t original,” he said. “Building one this big is a little different.” Novak made Granddaddy by blowing snow into large compartments with a silo blower, then stacking them on top of each other. He used a garbage pail for the nose and lids for the buttons. “It’s been a long, hard winter. We might as well have fun with it. If you can’t beat it, embrace it,” he said.
