Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe SEASALTER, England, March 2 (UPI) -- Motorists on a road in Kent, in southern England, said they were sickened last week by the smell of a decomposing whale on its way to a landfill. The 50-foot sperm whale died when it became stranded on the seacoast near the town of Seasalter, and after rotting on the beach for five days, was loaded onto a flatbed truck and driven down the A2 highway for disposal, the British newspaper the Daily telegraph reported Sunday. Advertisement "There was a Land Rover [vehicle] in front and behind, flashing orange lights, and this massive whale with its head and tail chopped off. There was blood and guts dripping off the back. The smell was unbelievable," said Mark Stephens, who witnessed the transport. Dozens of dead whales and dolphins are taken from the British coast to landfills annually, said Danny Groves of Britain's Whale and Dolphin Conservation. "It's fairly common. They have to be taken to landfill sites because they're a health hazard," Groves said.
