HINGHAM, Mass., Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Massachusetts police said an officer let a speeder off the hook when he explained he was excited about his winning lottery ticket.

Hingham police Sgt. Steven Dearth said an officer pulled over a car spotted going 49 mph in a 35 mph zone Thursday morning and he noticed the driver was physically shaking, the Boston Globe reported Friday.

Dearth said the driver explained he had just won a $50,000 lottery jackpot and was on his way to Braintree to collect his winnings.

The man showed his winning ticket to the officer, who let the man go with a verbal warning.

"He said, 'You've got to get there slow, otherwise you won't be able to use your winnings,'" Dearth said.

The driver's name was not released, but WCVB-TV, Boston, reported Scott Lowe, 22, of Richland, won $50,000 on a $2 scratch-off this week and traveled to Braintree to cash it.
