BROOME, Australia, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A 12-foot crocodile seen rolling in the surf prompted officials in western Australia to close a popular beach.

The croc could be seen surfing around waves in knee-deep water at Cable Beach in Broome, officials said. The reptile drew crowds of onlookers who marveled at his size and relative calm last Saturday. The croc never tried approaching land but was seen eyeing tourists on the beach who were there to do much the same to him, the West Australian reported Tuesday.

By late Sunday the crocodile had left and the beach was reopened to swimmers and surfers, officials said.
