SARASOTA, Fla., Feb. 19 (UPI) -- A 101-year-old Florida man running for the U.S. House of Representatives said he wants to improve society and he doesn't care if people call him "a fool."

Joe Newman of Sarasota announced he will run in the 16th Congressional District -- currently represented by Vern Buchanan, a Republican -- and will draw on his life experiences to convince other officials to take steps to improve society, WFLA-TV, Tampa, Fla., reported Wednesday.

"You learn through life you have certain responsibilities. And if you don't fulfill them, how can you look in the mirror?" Newman said.

Newman said his goals include ensuring the government can fund Social Security, expanding Medicare and eliminating poverty.

He said he hopes his candidacy will inspire others to reject special interests and demand more from their government.

"If people are saying, who is this fool at 101 and running? Call me a fool. I'm sorry, but I've got to get out and convince John and convince Jim, hey think!" he said. "What is the best thing our society can do and what is the responsibility of our society?

"My hope is that we get a chance to speak out and make people reflect on what you want from your society," he said.
