PLAINFIELD, Ill., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- School officials in Illinois turned down a father's request that he be punished in place of his daughter, but said it's OK if he serves detention with her.

The girl -- a third-grader at Meadow View Elementary School in Plainfield -- was ordered to detention for tardiness but the dad, whose name was not reported, volunteered to serve on her behalf, saying it was not her fault she was late, WLS-TV, Chicago, reported Thursday.

"Dad brings his child to school every day. The principal said the child will still serve the detention. That's their normal procedure and the rules are the rules," Plainfield School District 202 spokesman Tom Hernandez said. "But that dad is welcome to sit with his child for that 30 minutes."

The student, age 8, was scheduled to serve her time Friday.
