Randy Smith, spokesman for the South Florida Water Management District, said python control agent Bobby Hill captured a large female python Tuesday on the L-28 levee, located about 5 miles north of the Tamiami Trail, the Miami Herald reported Wednesday. Advertisement "It looks to be about 18 feet,'' Smith said. "It could very well be a state record.'' The state record for a python -- 18 feet, 8 inches -- was set by a serpent killed in May 2012 by snake collector Jason Leon. The snake weighed 128 pounds. Officials said the snake caught by Hill is being sent to the University of Florida to verify its length and weight. Burmese pythons have been known to reach a length of 20 feet or more in their native habitat.
