Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Staff members at Alabama's Trinity Medical Center said a neurosurgeon walked 8 miles in a snowstorm to perform life-saving emergency surgery at the hospital. Steve Davis, charge nurse at the hospital's neuro/stroke intensive care unit, said Dr. Zenko Hrynkiw was at Birmingham's other hospital, Brookwood Medical Center, when Davis called him Tuesday to come in for the procedure, Al.com reported Thursday. Advertisement Davis said Hrynkiw only made it a few blocks in his car before he became stuck in snowstorm traffic. "The cell service was bad so we were fading in and out," Davis said. "At one point, I heard him say, 'I'm walking.'" Davis said he alerted the authorities and they were on the lookout for Hrynkiw walking between the hospitals, but they saw no sign of him until a few hours later when he walked into Trinity. "He finally called me and said where's the patient? What's the status?" Davis said. "He spoke to the family and went off to surgery." Davis said the surgeon was in time to help a patient with a traumatic brain injury. "Without the surgery, the patient would have most likely died," Davis said. "But he is doing well." Advertisement Davis praised Hrynkiw for taking the lifesaving long walk in the snow, which he estimated to be about 8 miles. "This just speaks volumes to the dedication of the man," Davis said. "When I saw him, all I could say is 'you are a good man.'"
