Even though patients are supposed to be sober for six months prior to having the operation, a German woman showed up for a liver transplant at a hospital with a bottle of vodka in her bag.

A nurse at the University Hospital in Göttingen found the booze in the patient’s bag and dumped it out. The patient did admit to drinking a bottle of vodka the day before.

The hospital’s former head of transplants, Aiman O., is being investigated for manipulating medical files to allow patients to receive faster transplants. The 46-year-old is charged with 11 cases of attempted manslaughter and three cases of grievous bodily harm.

The doctor’s case is being heard by a court in Gottingen, Lower Saxony.

It is believed that the unidentified patient was still allowed to undergo the operation despite breaking the rules.
