Assistant Aviation Director Mark Wiebke said Charlotte Douglas International Airport received its composting permit Monday from the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources after more than a year of delays, the Charlotte Observer reported Thursday. Advertisement "That was a nice little hurdle to overcome," Wiebke said. He said the worms, which live in raised wooden bins, will be fed food trash and their waste will then be used as fertilizer on airport property. The composting operation is part of Charlotte Douglas' recycling center, which began operations in June 2012. The composting permit's delay was partially due to the airport lacking a required canopy to cover the area where trash is unloaded.
