A Las Vegas officer who was going to be demoted for violating department policy by taking Guns N Roses guitarist Daren Jay “DJ” Ashba and his girlfriend on a helicopter ride back in August opted to retire instead.

Capt. David O’Leary took Ashba and his girlfriend Nathalia Henao on a “fly along” on a police helicopter and then dropped them off at a field with champagne and roses as part of an elaborate marriage proposal.

An internal investigation into the matter found that O’Leary and Officer Ray Horsley misused department resources by using the chopper to assist Ashba with the marriage request.

Although civilians are occasionally allowed to go up in the helicopters to learn about the department and the way that it serves the city, the trips are supposed to take off from and land at police headquarters.

Horsley will be transferred out of Air Support Detail and will no longer be permitted to use department helicopters.

An investigation about the helicopter ride was launched after Ashba posted on social media about the proposal and mentioned the police.

Ashba captioned the photo with the following blurb:

"That was the most incredible day of our life!! Special thx to the Las Vegas Police Dept. for the most amazing helicopter private tour over Vegas! We landed in a field at Police headquarters were I had a table set up covered in roses n a bottle of the bubble stuff for @naty_yummi8 as we walked up to the table @karikaisner slipped me the ring, and thats when I proposed! it was beautiful she didn't expect a thing, it was magical. And thanks to our good friends for helping making it all happen!! Dave and @nitaoleary @tommyoleary"

O’Leary was going to be bumped down to lieutenant.
