About 46,000 take New Year's winter swims in Netherlands

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Organizers of winter swims in the Netherlands said about 46,000 people rang in the New Year by running into frigid waters.

The main event, at the Scheveningen resort in The Hague, featured about 10,000 people running into the North Sea Wednesday. Dozens of smaller events around the country brought the total number of cold water daredevils to about 46,000, DutchNews.nl reported Thursday.

Nos television reported the temperature of the North Sea water at Scheveningen Jan. 1 was a "relatively warm" 45.5 degrees.
