NEW YORK, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- A New York family's Christmas was saved by a pair of Santa cabbies who returned the gifts left behind in their trunk.

Matilda Garcia, 57, said she and her daughter accidentally left the gifts in the trunk of the cab Christmas Eve when they shared a ride to their separate homes and each thought the other had retrieved the gifts, the New York Post reported Monday.

Garcia said there were $500 worth of gifts in the cab.

"It was a little devastating," Garcia said. "My mom is 82. I don't know if this will be her last [Christmas]."

However, driver Moustapha Bah, who shares a cab with his brother, said he was preparing to pass the cab off to his brother Christmas morning when they opened the trunk and discovered the gifts.

Bah said his brother had driven Garcia and her daughter home.

"He realized it was the customer and he remembered where he dropped them," Bah said.

The cabbies brought the gifts to dispatch, where Garcia and her family retrieved them.

"There are still good people out there," Garcia said.
