NEW HAVEN, Conn., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Police in Connecticut said a man named Noel violated the spirit of Christmas by scaling a public Christmas tree to shout political slogans.

New Haven Police Lt. Jeff Hoffman said Noel Delgado, 42, was seen climbing the Christmas tree on the Green in New Haven just before noon Wednesday with two banners that could not be read because they became tangled in the tree, the New Haven Register reported Thursday.

"He was yelling kind of indecipherably about causes, but none of it really connected," Hoffman said.

Hoffman said Officer David Runlett led other officers and fire personnel in attempting to talk Delgado down from the tree.

Delgado came down from the tree around 12:30 p.m. and was arrested on a breach of peace charge.

Police said he continued to shout while being arrested, but they did not say what political causes he was advocating from his perch in the tree.
