FREMONT, Calif., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Authorities in California said a cat that ran away from home three years ago was found to be living just a few miles away.

Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said the orange tabby cat, Dash, had spent three years living as a stray in Fremont and had been getting food from a woman who recently moved away, the Oakland (Calif.) Tribune reported Friday.

The cat was brought to the Tri-City Animal Shelter by the home's new owner and he was found to have an implanted microchip identifying his owners as Joseph Lopez and Kristin Hergert, who live about 3.5 miles away from where he was being fed.

The couple said Dash had run away from home shortly after they moved from San Jose, Calif., to Fremont.

Dash and his owners were reunited at the shelter Thursday.
