VARNERSBORG, Sweden, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- A prisoner at a minimum security facility in Sweden said he escaped to visit a dentist and then turned himself in to authorities.
The 51-year-old prisoner, whose name was not reported, told the Dagens Nyheter newspaper he was serving a one-month sentence at the Ostragard facility in Vanersborg and he was denied medical care for the pain in his tooth, The Local.se reported Friday.
"My whole face was swollen. I just couldn't stand it anymore," the prisoner said.
The man said he escaped the facility and visited the nearest dentist's office to have his inflamed tooth removed. He then turned himself in to police and was returned to Ostragard.
The prisoner said guards issued him a warning and extended his sentence by a single day for escaping.
