Nov. 21 (UPI) -- A former Georgia high school teacher and city councilman pleaded guilty to sexual assault for meeting one of his students at a McDonald’s and then having sex with her.
Norman Earl Hodge III pleaded guilty in Walker County Superior Court to having sex with a student from his economics class at LaFayette High School twice during Christmas break last year and was sentenced to five years of probation. Hodge was also ordered to pay $2,850 in fines and fees.
According to a police report, Hodge, 42, met the 17-year-old student at a McDonald's and told her that he had bought her a Kavu bag. They then left the restaurant and went to a lake house where Hodge gave her the gift and the two had sex. After a week of texting, they had sex again a week later.
LaFayette High School Principal Michael Culberson found out about the relationship from a concerned parent and the girl admitted to having sex with Hodge after she was questioned.
"Other than that nothing happened," she wrote in a statement. "He's a good guy and I'd really hate for him to loose his job. So lets just end all this, please."
Walker County Schools Superintendent Damon Raines, Walker County Schools Director of Personnel Heather Holloway and Culberson met with Hodge to ask him about the situation.
Hodge began to cry and said, "It's true." He then resigned his teaching position.
