Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe IRWINDALE, Calif., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- A California city is asking a judge to halt production of Asian hot sauce Sriracha until the factory's smell can be reduced. Irwindale officials said residents living near the Huy Fong Foods plant in the city have complained of burning eyes, irritated throats and headaches caused by the spicy odor that seems to emanate from the factory during the sauce's production, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday. Advertisement Irwindale City Attorney Fred Galante said the city filed a lawsuit Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court labeling the odor a public nuisance and asking a judge to have the factory cut production in half until measures can be taken to reduce the stench. "Given how long it's going on, we had no choice but to institute this action," Galante said. Galante said Huy Fong Foods officials initially cooperated with officials in discussions to find ways to reduce the smell, but they later claimed there was no odor issue. Huy Fong Foods officials did not immediately return calls and emails for comment, the Times said. The company began producing sauce at the Irwindale facility last year.
