CARLTON LANDING, Okla., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Officials in an Oklahoma county said they have approved the incorporation of the area's first new town in decades.

Pittsburg County commissioners voted Monday to approve the incorporation of Carlton Landing following a 15-to-1 approval by voters in the community during an Oct. 8 special election, the McAlester (Okla.) News-Capital reported Tuesday.

Officials said the vote marked the creation of the county's first new town in decades.

Grant Heath, founder of the community, said Carlton Landing boasts a population of only 56 but it is expected to quickly outgrow its new distinction as Oklahoma's smallest town.

"Currently, at least one new home breaks ground each week in Carlton Landing," he said. "This growth is in keeping with [our] projections. We continue to grow our construction capacity to handle the strong market response."
