Pentagon suspends JIEDDO Twitter account after joke about movie theater bombing

The Pentagon has suspended the Twitter account of an agency dealing with improvised explosive devices after it posted a joke about two movie theater bombings in the Philippines.

A staff member at the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Organization (JIEDDO) tweeted Wednesday that the theaters must have been showing "Gigli," a 2003 flop starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez.

“Were they re-showing Gigli? Bomb explosions occur at 2 movie theaters in the Philippines… the IED is a global threat,” read the tweet.

When the post sparked outrage online, the account made another bad joke by way of apology.

“Bad ppl doing bad thing didn’t warrant bad movie reference. Will punish #socialmedia rep by forcing 2 watch Gigli."

Finally, after mounting criticism, the JIEDDO account posted, “Tweet was in poor taste. We apologize.” But it was too late.

Pentagon press secretary George Little quickly announced in a tweet of his own that he ordered the suspension of the JIEDDO Twitter account “following inappropriate and offensive tweets" that were "plainly unacceptable."

JIEDDO issued a statement Friday saying those responsible for the tweets “have been appropriately disciplined after an internal review.”

Spokesman David Small said JIEDDO "has a policy and procedure in place for selecting and crafting social media posts. That policy was not followed."

“We sincerely apologize for the distasteful comment. Bottom line, there is nothing funny about an IED event.”
