GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- A Swedish man bitten by his pet cobra can keep his 40 snakes, with officials saying they thought the reptiles were doing well in his apartment.

After he was attacked, the owner remained alert enough to call emergency services personnel and identify the snake that bit him, before falling unconscious in his apartment in Gothenburg, The Local reported Saturday. He was hospitalized for several days.

County inspectors and a snake expert visited the man's apartment Friday.

The snake owner, who was not identified, was told he could keep his pets after he was quizzed about their welfare, Expressen said.

"It was a short visit and it went well. We found that there were no acute or serious shortcomings. The snakes seemed to be feeling good," said Johanna Jensen, the county board's head for animal welfare checks. "We looked at the snakes to see how fat or thin they were and they are fine. We also looked at their skin and could tell that the humidity and temperature was correct."

Officials informed the man's neighbors they don't have to worry about the animals escaping because they were properly housed.

The Local said another inspection would be conducted soon.

The report did not provide details about how or when the man was bitten.
