SUDLERSVILLE, Md., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- A U.S. military plane dropped a dummy bomb on a parking lot in Sudlersville, Md., narrowly missing a bar, its patrons and vehicles, the bar's co-owners said.

The practice bomb was part of a training exercise but when it fell from the sky Thursday, patrons of Darlene's Tavern said they had no clue what was happening, WJZ-TV, Baltimore, reported Friday.

"It is crazy. I never would have thought this," said Lena Hartlove, a co-owner of Darlene's Tavern. "There was debris all over everybody's vehicles and everything."

Military officials said the bomb was being used on a training mission and was on a jet returning from the exercise at the Air National Guard base in Middle River, Md., WJZ reported. Once they realized a malfunction may have occurred, the pilots worked to avoid any densely populated areas.

While the accident was being investigated, a mechanical malfunction may be to blame, military officials said.

"There was nothing on it that was explosive. That's pretty much it," said Lt. Col. Charles S. Kohler of the Maryland National Guard.

"The bomb squad told us we should rename the bar the 'Bulls-eye,'" tavern co-owner Darlene Hurley said.
