Woman delivers baby at elementary school

MIRAMAR, Fla., Aug. 24 (UPI) -- A Florida woman's newborn daughter apparently couldn't wait to get a head start on school after being born in an elementary school nurse's office, police said.

Maria Lys Colin was driving to the hospital Thursday after having contractions but had to stop to pick up her son at school because her husband was out of town on business. While sitting the school office waiting for her son to arrive Colin's contractions began to intensify.

After school personnel moved the woman to the nurse's office her water broke and, with the help of school resource officer Natasha Richardson, delivered four-pound Maybelle Colin Sainvilus, the South Florida Sun Sentinel said.

Richardson said she was given a brief lesson on child delivery back during her time at the police academy but had never encountered such a situation before.

"Maybe my mommy instincts just kicked in," she said.

Mother and child were taken to a nearby hospital where both were in good health. Richardson visited Colin Friday morning.

"She was very happy to see me," Richardson said. "And baby looks good."
