BERWICK, England, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Two men on a quest for an early-morning breakfast broke into a diner in northern England and wound up in a 5-hour standoff with police, authorities allege.

Police said in a statement they discovered the intruders inside a cafe in Berwick in Northumberland about 12:35 a.m. Monday.

The men, ages 20 and 21, were armed with knives and refused to come out, police said.

They threatened officers, but after 5 hours of negotiations, agreed to surrender, The (Newcastle) Journal reported.

"Apparently they were hungry and wanted some quiche," said Angela Marshall, who runs the business with her husband. "There was a little bit of money in the till, but I think they just wanted food and then it got out of hand."

The men were arrested on suspicion of burglary.
