GOTEMBA, Japan, July 30 (UPI) -- Japanese animal rescuers said a stray dog on the loose for weeks in the Mount Fuji area has been captured and workers are searching for its owner.

Employees of the Gotemba public health center said the mixed-breed dog was captured Monday after wandering on the peak of Mount Fuji and surviving on handouts from hikers since at least July 1, when the first sighting was reported to the Rescue Japanese Animal Victims group in Tokyo, the Asahi Shimbun reported Tuesday.

Rescue Japanese Animal Victims said it is hoping the male dog's owner will come forward. The animal, which did not have a collar when it was captured, is friendly toward humans and shows signs of having been someone's pet, officials said.

The group said it may find the dog a new home if its owner is not identified.
