LONDON, Ontario, July 22 (UPI) -- An Ontario couple said they were shocked to find out their marriage was one of 830 in the province to be officiated by people who were not authorized.

Gordon and Paula Moore of London said they were married Dec. 31, 2008, but discovered this month that the person who officiated the wedding ceremony was one of five people who were found not to be authorized to perform weddings, The London Free Press reported Monday.

"It was a bit of a shock," Paula Moore said.

The Moores' wedding was officiated by Dale Brewster, who ran the Crystal Wedding Chapel in London. QMI Agency said it was unable to reach Brewster for comment.

Jason Wesley, spokesman for the Ontario Ministry of Government Services, said officials discovered the five people were not legally authorized to perform weddings while implementing a new system for cross-referencing weddings with the officials who performed the ceremonies.

"I want to make sure that people aren't alarmed. These marriages have been registered. The individuals who performed the marriages were not authorized to do so but it doesn't invalidate those marriages," Wesley said.

He said the couples can request new marriage certificates at no cost.
