Congregation disarms gun-toting bicyclist who interrupted mass

SANGONERA LA VERDE, Spain, July 16 (UPI) -- Police in Spain said a bicycle-riding gunman who interrupted morning mass was disarmed by a group of worshipping women.

Authorities said the Church of Nuestra Senora de los Angeles in Sangonera la Verde, Murcia province, was holding morning mass Monday when the cyclist rode into the church, The Local.es reported Tuesday.

A group of female worshippers took the man's gun as another worshipper tackled him as he jumped onto the altar and demanded the women give him his gun back.

Police and Civil Guard took the man into custody.

He was taken to a hospital and treated with psychiatric medication, officials said.
