MERIDIAN, Miss., July 15 (UPI) -- Police in Mississippi said an officer discovered more than $360,000 in a hidden compartment inside a car pulled over for a traffic violation.

Capt. Dean Harper of the Meridian Police Department said the officer pulled the vehicle over July 9 "for a routine traffic violation" and asked the driver for consent to search the car when the officer suspected "there could be some type of criminal activity," ABC News reported Monday.

The driver consented and "during the search the officer found a secret compartment in the car that contained $364,590 in $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills," Harper said.

"We are in the process of investigating where this money has come from. Once we gather that information the case will be reviewed by the Circuit Court of Lauderdale County," Harper said. "The driver of the vehicle was questioned and is cooperating with police."

The motorist's name was not released by police.
