Topeka Zoo officials said 3-year-old golden lion tamarin Devra gave birth to the twins Wednesday after arriving at the zoo in December as part of the Golden Lion Tamarin Species Survival Plan, The (Topeka) Capital-Journal, reported Thursday. Advertisement Zoo Director Brendan Wiley said the family will be kept away from the public eye for a few days to give the first-time mother time to get used to caring for infants. "We want to make sure she gets every opportunity to help her newborns survive," Wiley said. "The first hurdle to overcome is knowing that the newborns are nursing. We haven't observed this yet." The zoo did not announce the genders of the infants. Officials said there are about 1,600 tamarin monkeys remaining in the wild in Brazil.
