PASADENA, Calif., July 8 (UPI) -- A group of 566 mariachi musicians gathered at California's Rose Bowl to set a Guinness World Record with a 5-minute performance.

The musicians performed during halftime of the Mexico vs. Panama match of the 2013 Gold Cup in Pasadena and Guinness World Records officials were on hand to verify the record, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

Pasadena city spokesman William Boyer said the successful record attempt was planned in part to celebrate recent renovations of the Rose Bowl.

The huge band, which played Ranchera classics "Cielito Lindo" and "El Son de la Negra," beat out the previous record of 555 mariachis, set at a conference in Tucson.
