Britain's royal barge strikes bridge

LONDON, June 15 (UPI) -- Engines failed on Queen Elizabeth II's barge, the one she rode down the Thames to mark her Diamond Jubilee, leaving it wedged under a bridge, its maker said.

The 94-foot Gloriana got into trouble Thursday when its engines failed during a trip up the famed river, The Sun said. The current and wind blew the stricken vessel, which had four passengers aboard -- though not the queen -- into the Kew bridge.

Mark Edwards, who built the rowbarge, said it suffered a golf ball sized hole in the side and some cosmetic damage.

The ship led the flotilla down the Thames last year when Elizabeth II celebrated her 60 years on the throne.
