BIG PINE KEY, Fla., June 9 (UPI) -- Two Florida sheriff's deputies said a hapless deer seemed glad to accept their help as it stood on the side of a road with its head stuck in an empty chip bag.

Deer in the Florida Keys are normally skittish but the deputies said this particular animal seemed to be waiting for a helping hand as it stood along No Name Road in Monroe County early Sunday.

"I think it wanted that bag off," said Deputy Becky Herrin, who came to the rescue with her partner, Deputy Joshua Gordon, while on routine patrol on Big Pine Key.

Gordon snapped a cellphone photo of the deer wearing the Doritos bag and then removed the bag. The deer scampered away into the darkened woods.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel said key deer are a federally protected cousin of the whitetail deer and normally subsist on leaves and berries.

Herrin deduced the discarded bag was too good for the deer to pass up.

"It must have wanted that last chip in the bottom of the bag," she said.
