Pilot diverts Spanish flight for historical tour

MADRID, June 4 (UPI) -- Passengers on a Spanish airline's flight said they were delighted when the pilot altered the flight plan to give them an impromptu tour of Lugo's Roman walls.

The passengers on Iberia flight IB 0512 from Madrid to A Coruna said the pilot asked their permission Monday before altering the flight plan to take them over Lugo, which is the only city in the world that still features intact Roman walls dating back to the 3rd century, The Local.es reported Tuesday.

They said the in-flight entertainment began at Barajas airport when the pilot sung them a take-off greeting in English and continued during the flight as the pilot introduced each city they flew over and gave historical facts about the locations.

The passengers told the La Voz de Galicia newspaper the flight crew told them the pilot's behavior was not unusual.

"They told us the captain's joyful behavior was normal and that he was a really nice guy to both the crew and the customers," another passenger said.
