ANNAPOLIS, Md., June 3 (UPI) -- A jury in Maryland decided an Annapolis renter's bedbug infestation was so bad she deserves $800,000 from her landlord.

An Anne Arundel County Circuit Court jury decided Wednesday Cornelius J. Bennett of Arnold must pay Faika Shaaban, 66, $800,000 in compensatory and punitive damages for the itchy rash, scabs and lesions she suffered all over her body for 8 1/2 months, CapitalGazette.com reported.

The jury gave Shaaban twice what her attorney, Daniel Whitney, sought, the news website said.

"The jury was asked to send a message," Whitney said. "I think they have."

Whitney said Barrett had failed to inform Shaaban there was an open code violation for a bedbug infestation before she signed a lease on the apartment Sept. 28, 2011. She quickly developed a rash from the insects' bites.

"Every night blood-sucking parasites would come into her bed and feed upon her," Whitney said.

CapitalGazette.com said Barrett did not answer repeated calls to his home Thursday.
