PHSAR CHHNANG, Cambodia, June 2 (UPI) -- Hundreds of Cambodian villagers have visited a python they believe has magical powers and can bring them good luck, a local police chief says.

A 40-year-old farmer, Chan Tha, and his son found the 10-foot-long, 44-pound python and its 39 babies near his home in the Kampong Chhang province Monday while searching for crickets, The Phnom Penh Post reported.

The pair have since been caring for the animals as pets.

Police Chief Ngouk Bunthy told the Post some visitors who pray to the snake also make monetary donations for good luck.

Bunthy also said authorities are reluctant to remove the animals from the home, as villagers believe it would cause misfortune for the village.
