PARIS, May 31 (UPI) -- A French dictionary has given legitimacy to the term "French kiss" by adding the word "galocher," which means to kiss with tongues, to the reference book.

Laurence Laporte of the Robert publishing house said the Petite Robert dictionary added the word for the edition that went on sale Thursday, The Local.fr reported Friday.

"We have always had many expressions to describe 'French kissing' like 'kissing at length in the mouth,' but it's true we have never had one single word," Laporte said.

Laporte said "galocher" has been a popular slang term for the practice for some time, "but only now is it being recognized in a French dictionary."

The English term "French kissing" was reputedly spread by soldiers who returned home from World War I with new knowledge of lip-locking techniques.
