1.4 million Moscow residents take part in city cleanup

MOSCOW, April 27 (UPI) -- There's spring cleaning, then there's this: More than 1 million Moscow residents took part in a mass cleanup event at city parks and squares, officials said.

Moscow Deputy Mayor Pyotr Biryukov said 1.4 million city residents braved some terrible weather to pick up litter and beautify city streets, parks and public squares.

The so-called subbotnik, Russian for "Saturday cleanup," stretches back to the Soviet era, RIA Novosti said.
