ANCHORAGE, Alaska, April 22 (UPI) -- An Alaska Department of Fish and Game wildlife biologist said black bears have been spotted in Anchorage, signaling the end of the hibernation season.

Jessy Coltrane said she gets her first report of black bears in Anchorage around mid-April each year, and bears have been spotted in recent days in the vicinity of Far North Bicentennial Park, the Anchorage Daily News reported Monday.

Coltrane said no major incidents have been reported in the city so far, but the number of the animals will grow as more bears leave their dens in the coming weeks.

Coltrane told a crowd of about two dozen people Sunday at a "Living and Recreating in Bear Country" presentation at the Eagle River Nature Center they should be aware of potential bear habitats, keep garbage secure and put birdseed away until after Halloween.
