Crash caused by pickup with no brakes

JAMESTOWN, N.Y., April 18 (UPI) -- Police in New York state said a crash was caused by a man attempting to roll his disabled pickup truck to a scrap yard without brakes.

Jamestown police said a 1995 blue Chevrolet Tahoe being driven by Jason Burger, 28, failed to stop at a Jamestown intersection around 6 p.m. Tuesday and was struck by a vehicle, The Post-Journal, Jamestown, reported Thursday.

Occupants of the other vehicle were taken to a hospital via ambulance, but Burger was not injured. The Post-Journal did not say how many people were in the other vehicle or the extent of their injuries.

Police said Burger told them he was trying to roll the Tahoe, which was missing lug nuts from its wheels and had its battery disconnected, to a nearby scrap yard. However, the vehicle did not have any brakes and he was unable to stop at the stop sign.

"Things like this are what make the job tough," said Capt. Todd Isaacson of the Jamestown Police Department. "I just don't know what's going through people's heads sometimes."

Burger was arrested on charges of failure to stop at a stop sign and inadequate brakes.
