TN man pocket-dials tip-off call to police

ATHENS, Tenn., April 10 (UPI) -- A Tennessee man tipped off authorities to his possession of narcotics when he accidentally "pocket-dialed" 911, police allege.

Athens police took Aaron Thompson, 33, of Sweetwater into custody Friday when they allegedly found nine Alprazolam pills on him without a prescription, WBIR-TV in Knoxville reported.

Thompson had accidentally called dispatchers at the McMinn County E-911 Center during an argument at the Athens home of the mother of his children. The dispatchers, who allegedly could hear him shouting about marijuana and methadone and "looking for a pipe to smoke something with," notified the police.

"I've been here almost 11 years and this is the only time I'm aware of that we've had a call happen this way," Athens police officer Jamie Carmack said.

Police said when they went to the address from which the call was made, Thompson thought they had arrived because of his yelling and explained that he wanted to know why his children's mother had taken him off her insurance policy.

When Thompson learned of the real reason for the police visit, "It really surprised him as well," Carmack said.

Carmack said Thompson agreed to a search of his person.

Thompson posted the $2,000 bond to get out of jail.
