NEW YORK, April 8 (UPI) -- A New York man knocked off his bicycle by an unmarked police car said he is being billed $1,263.01 for damage to the vehicle.

Justin Johnsen, 31, who required stitches for the deep cuts he incurred in the Nov. 5 incident in Brooklyn, said he received the "preposterous" bill from the city last month for damage incurred by the 2009 Ford Taurus in the collision, the New York Post reported Monday.

"I was upset. I was in kind of disbelief that they were going to send this letter after four months or so and ask me to pay damages for their vehicle, when they hit me when I was on a bicycle," Johnson said.

He said he was not issued a citation for the crash.

Daniel Flanzig, a lawyer representing Johnsen pro bono, said the city "should be sending an apology letter instead of a bill."
