The proposal, which would have been non-binding and wouldn't have required campus police to abide by it, was struck down Tuesday after student government members objected to the idea of issuing tickets instead of arrests for amounts of marijuana under 4 ounces, the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman reported Wednesday. Advertisement "Students come to this university ... to change the world and not to get high," student government member Perry Pickei said. Supporters said the proposal would have saved money for university police and keep students and staff members safe. University Police Chief Robert Dahlstrom, who was present at Tuesday's meeting, said it is department policy to issue tickets instead of arrests for less than 2 ounces of marijuana. He said the decision of whether to arrest students carrying less than 4 ounces of marijuana is left up to the discretion of officers.
