CALGARY, Alberta, March 14 (UPI) -- The Calgary Zoo in Alberta said a zookeeper has been fired after leaving an enclosure door unlatched, allowing gorillas to wander into a kitchen.

Zoo curator Malu Celli said the gorillas left their enclosure March 8 through the unlatched door and made their way to a kitchen, where they "had an encounter" with the zookeeper who had left the door unsecured, the Toronto Star reported Thursday.

Celli said the worker was treated for minor injuries.

"The person no longer works for us but the person is doing fine," Celli said.

The curator said there was no danger of the primates escaping into any public areas, as they would have faced a "gorilla-safe" gate if they tried to get any further.

"It's still a very serious situation and potentially could have been worse," Celli said.
