Russian city plans meteorite monument

CHELYABINSK, Russia, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Officials in a Russian city said they are holding a contest to design a monument commemorating the recent meteorite that caused more than a thousand injuries.

Chelyabinsk city officials said they are planning to hold a competition to solicit design proposals from the monument and to design a logo for souvenirs including calendars and magnets, RIA Novosti reported Tuesday.

"The meteorite that flew over the Chelyabinsk Region, will be remembered by the residents for a long time. The citizens witnessed a unique global-scale event. That's why the authorities and proactive citizens were thinking about how to immortalize this interplanetary visit," the local government said in a statement.

The meteorite hit the ground Feb. 15, setting off a shockwave that damaged thousands of buildings and injured more than 1,500 people.
