News execs: Romney campaign overcharging

WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- News organizations say Mitt Romney's U.S. presidential campaign overbilled them for the expenses of reporters traveling with the Republican nominee.

A letter to the campaign signed by executives from The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, Financial Times and other organizations was published Monday by BuzzFeed, Politico reported. BuzzFeed's editor, McKay Coppins, also signed the letter.

Some of the signers said they were also contesting the charges with American Express.

"We've dealt with numerous campaigns over the past decades and understand that we pay a premium to travel with a candidate. But recent invoices from your campaign have raised serious questions about the charges you have forwarded to us for travel with Mitt Romney," the letter said.

Romney reportedly spent more than $1 billion during the most expensive presidential campaign in U.S. history, and the campaign still owes more than $1 million.

In the letter, the editors cite charges such as $745 for a vice presidential debate viewing party Oct. 11 and $812 for a "meal and a hold" Oct. 18.
