ABERDEEN, Scotland, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Four ducklings stolen from a Scottish elementary school are back home after being found a mile away, officials said.

Police were still investigating the theft from the Drumblade Primary School in Aberdeenshire, The Scotsman reported. The ducklings had been at the school, cared for by its young students, since they emerged from their eggs.

A spokeswoman for the county council announced Monday the ducklings were back at the school. She said they were "bewildered and confused" when they were found in a ditch.

"We are delighted that the ducks were found safe and well. They have had a warm bath, some food and have settled back at the school," Fiona Nicolson, the head teacher, said. "On behalf of the pupils I would like to thank everybody who helped in the search for our feathered friends. I am sure the children will be over the moon when they return to school on Wednesday."
